(If you decide that you like Mint and want to install it, you'll need to boot and install it in the same boot mode that Windows is using - that's why this is important.) Rufus is more reliable for making UEFI bootable USB's than UnetBootin.īoot the Mint USB, test it out for a while to see that things work well on your machine. In that case use Rufus option to make the USB UEFI bootable. (Not talking about the "System Reserved" partition - that's something else.) If you see an EFI partition, then it's installed in UEFI mode. Go into disk management, look at disk partitions and see if there is one designated as "EFI", or "EFI System Partition", or something to that effect. If 64-bit, it could be installed in either mode and you'll need to investigate a bit more. If 32-bit, it's installed in Legacy mode.

(On a UEFI computer, it can be installed either way.) First, go to Control Panel -> System and see if Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. In this scenario, you should figure out ahead of time if Windows is installed in UEFI mode or Legacy/Bios mode.

Having said that, if you're planning to boot from and install to a newer computer (2011-12 +) that came with Windows 8 or higher, a more reliable tool to use would be Rufus.

Just download the ISO directly from Mint yourself at this link, then choose "Diskimage" (instead of "Distribution") on start screen of UNetBootin and click the "." button to navigate to your ISO file. I'm guessing that you're saying that Mint 18 is not one of the choices shown (yet) for it to download automatically for you. With UnetBootin you can either have it download the ISO file for you, then make the live USB or you can download the ISO file yourself ahead of time and point UnetBootin to it when making the live USB.
